EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
