Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these drugs should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
